YOU Can Take Great Night Shots With the HP 945
by Photosmarty

I have had several people ask me why there is no nightshot setting on the 945, I don't know!

It can easily be recreated though, with manual settings.

Don't forget if you are taking some foreground scenery and want the background to be a feature as well, use the NIGHT setting on the flash. This simply takes a photo of the person or object in the foreground with flash and then continues an exposure of the background. Therefore if the subject is of people make sure you tell them to stand still for a while after the flash has gone off.

To take night shots I personally do the following:

  • YOU WILL NEED A TRIPOD.
  • Try not to use the zoom too much, causes a shake at slightest touch.
  • Best option after camera is mounted on tripod is to use self-timer so that you don't have to touch the camera at all while the photograph is being taken
  • Fix ISO at 100 to avoid noise
  • You MUST have digital flash off, else all photos will have unwanted noise.
  • Then, experimemt with exposure compensation - reducing to -1.0 will greatly improve the shot and make it look more 'nighttime' (this is all a nighttime mode does anyway) applies a negative exposure to create 'proper' darkness, experiment with more up to -2.0 if the subject has more light.

However look at Liales (a forum member) Photo of the Day, I think he stuck the camera to auto and hey, pretso! It doesn't always work that way though . (ed note: Alex actually followed many of Stuart's tips here but admitted in the forum that sometimes he just runs it on auto and gets lucky :).
